Symmetry in motion

Want an unfair advantage in sports? Develop an injury-free body and TWO strong sides!

This quote stems from an article named “The Eighth Avenue Contrologist” from 1964:

Pilates raged, at lunch, against American emphasis on sports—”always throwing the ball. One-handed. This is not exercise.” He claims that athletes have more physical problems than non-athletes when they reach middle-age because of improperly developed muscles. Pilates himself likes to play tennis, but “I play left and right handed. It’s hard to find partners.”

We love it when JHP gets snarky… and a little braggy. And while there’s nothing wrong with sports in general, the fact that Pilates is a well-balanced activity for the entire moving body is possibly its most important—yet underrated—feature.

What has Pilates made you better at?
